Personal Philosophy

In spite

In spite of the daily struggle
I feel within me a peace that ennobles me
And although the world makes me sad
I renew my belief in it every morning.

Human injustice does not depress me
The shadow of my pain does not stain me
Just as the night does not blacken
The window pane with its passing.

And even though I despair for not comprehending
I hide my wound from whomever wounds me
And have the grace to smile.

And so, for the love in which I have believed,
Suffering like all the rest, I have done my duty
Through the lofty heroism of living.
